A field of Thoroughbreds breaks from the numbered starting gate at Hialeah Park as a dense crowd fills the grandstand and infield rail behind them. Hialeah Park, opened in 1925 by Joseph Widener and rebuilt in the early 1930s, was among America's most fashionable winter racing venues, famed for its Mediterranean architecture and its colony of flamingos. The numbered stalls of the gate and the packed apron capture the spectacle of a big-race afternoon in South Florida.
