The view looks across a valley of green fields and scattered trees toward layered mountain ridges under a pale sky. Hickory Nut Gap cuts through the Blue Ridge Mountains southeast of Asheville, a well-known scenic passage in western North Carolina. The phrase "Land of the Sky" was a regional slogan for the Asheville area, and the gap served as a route for travelers crossing the Blue Ridge as well as a scenic destination in its own right.
