About this postcard

A large brick high school stands behind a lawn and sidewalk, its three-story Victorian-era facade detailed with arched windows, gabled dormers, iron roof finials, and two deep round-arched entrance porches reached by steps. The building's scale reflects Lynchburg's late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century investment in public education, when the city's growing high school system occupied substantial masonry buildings designed as civic landmarks. By the 1910s, Lynchburg was a rail and manufacturing center, and its public schools formed part of the city's civic infrastructure.
