About this postcard

The High Water Mark of the Rebellion monument stands as a tall granite obelisk on the Gettysburg battlefield, with a Civil War field cannon and its limber in the foreground and flower beds along the base. Dedicated in 1892, the monument was designed by Colonel John B. Bachelder and erected by the Memorial Association. It marks the approximate point of the farthest Confederate advance during Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863. Bachelder described the spot as where "one of the most gallant charges recorded in history terminated" and "the tide of success of the Confederacy turned." The sender's note describes a Pennsylvania tour, with the state Capitol at Harrisburg one day and the battlefield the next morning.
