About this postcard

The photograph shows the High Water Mark of the Rebellion monument at Gettysburg: a granite obelisk on a stepped base, flanked by Civil War field cannon on their carriages, with stacked cannonballs and a small stone building nearby. The monument marks the farthest point reached by Confederate troops during Pickett's Charge on July 3, 1863, the climactic assault of the Battle of Gettysburg. Colonel Bachelder, who designed it, said the spot was where "one of the most gallant charges recorded in history terminated" and "the tide of success of the Confederacy turned." The Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association erected the memorial in 1892, and its bronze book lists the Union and Confederate units engaged there.
