Highway 99 near Mt. Shasta, California, 1948

About this postcard

A two-lane highway curves over a concrete bridge below snow-capped Mount Shasta, with dense evergreen forest and a line of utility poles along the road. The scene shows the mountain route through northern California in the late 1940s, when U.S. 99 was the main north-south highway through the state and auto travel to places like Mount Shasta and Lake Shasta was growing. Dunsmuir, in the Sacramento River canyon, was long a Southern Pacific railroad town and a stop on the route to Mount Shasta. The view reflects the postwar rise of auto tourism on the mountain highways of Siskiyou County.
