Highway and dam, Shoshone Canyon, WY, circa 1930

About this postcard

A concrete dam spans the narrow, rocky gorge of Shoshone Canyon, holding back a reservoir; water spills down the dam face toward the river, and a road with a few small red buildings runs along the right bank. The printed caption identifies the scene as the highway and dam on the Cody Way to Yellowstone Park. The dam is the Shoshone Dam, later renamed Buffalo Bill Dam, completed in 1910 on the Shoshone River west of Cody. Built to store water for irrigation, it was among the early federal reclamation dams in the West, and the canyon road carried travelers from Cody toward Yellowstone.
