Highway and Tunnel on Skyline Trail, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, circa 1935

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

A paved road curves past a rock-cut tunnel entrance on the Skyline Trail (now Skyline Drive) in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, with a rocky, tree-topped embankment on the left and a forested slope rising to the right. The Skyline Drive was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and other New Deal labor in the 1930s as a scenic ridge road through the newly established park, and its stone-faced tunnels and overlooks became signature features of the route. The card's linen-era coloring and numbering date it to the mid-1930s, when the park was being promoted to motor tourists.
