About this postcard

A reconstructed view of Old Fort Winnebago: a stockaded enclosure of whitewashed log buildings with a flagpole and American flag at center, surrounded by open lawn and scattered outbuildings, with a two-story stone-and-log house in the left foreground. The fort was established in 1828 at the strategic portage between the Fox and Wisconsin rivers and garrisoned until the 1840s; today the site preserves the Surgeon's Quarters and is operated as a Wisconsin historical site. The card's bright, hand-colored look is typical of mid-century linen postcards.
