Holly and horseshoe Christmas postcard, Kane, PA, circa 1907

Card type
Novelty

About this postcard

The design pairs a brown horseshoe, a familiar good-luck sign, with sprays of blue-green holly and red berries around a small snow-covered church with a blue roof and steeple. A crescent moon and stars sit at upper left, and the printed greeting reads "MERRY CHRISTMAS" at lower right. Eva's note to her sister Amelia in Kane, PA, tells of a cold trip home and a brief visit from Will, who came out on the 1.45 car and went back on the 4.14, so they did not see him. The timing catches the ordinary rhythm of small-town travel in the period, when trolley or interurban schedules shaped a visit.
