A sprig of holly with green leaves and clusters of red berries is printed across the upper half of the card above the greeting "A Merry Christmas." Holly, an evergreen with winter berries, was a standard motif of early twentieth-century Christmas cards, carried over from older English and German holiday traditions. The lettering is embossed in gold, a common decorative treatment on lithographed greetings of the 1900sā1910s.
Gold-embossed lettering; heavy overall toning and brown foxing spots; stamp and wavy cancellation plus a circular postmark struck on the front; handwritten signature in ink at lower right; slightly worn corners.
Postmark: BALTIMORE MD DEC 23 12 30 AM (year not legible). Undivided back ("THIS SIDE IS FOR THE ADDRESS ONLY"), embossed holly stock, 1c green Franklin stamp; heavy toning/edge wear and album-foxing.
