A spray of European holly with spiny green leaves and clusters of bright red berries arcs across a pale stippled background, with "A Happy New Year" printed at the right. Holly was a common motif on New Year and Christmas cards of the period, its evergreen leaves and winter berries standing for renewal and good fortune. The card carried a holiday note from Mary to her sister Abbie, mentioning Christmas cards exchanged and wishing the family a happy New Year.
