A spray of European holly — spiny green leaves and clusters of bright red berries — arcs across a pale, stippled background, with the greeting "A Happy New Year" printed in red script at the right. Holly was a standard motif of early twentieth-century New Year and Christmas cards, its evergreen leaves and winter berries symbolizing renewal and good fortune for the coming year. The small red number at the lower left marks this as one design in a publisher's stock series.
