About this postcard
The east front of Mount Vernon stands across a broad lawn, with white clapboard siding, a red roof, a columned piazza, cupola, and brick chimneys framed by large trees. A colonnade connects the house to the dependency buildings at right. The printed caption calls it "HOME OF WASHINGTON" and notes that the first president lived and died there; it presents the estate as a permanent memorial to "the father of our country." Washington's plantation home overlooks the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia. The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association saved and restored the house beginning in 1858, and it remains a historic house museum.
