About this postcard

The Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company's Home Office Building in Springfield, Massachusetts, fills the view as a long red-brick Georgian Revival office block with white colonnades and a central tower topped by a gold dome. Its formal facade and landscaped grounds presented the insurer as a stable civic institution; MassMutual had been founded in Springfield in 1851 and ranked among the city's major financial firms. The card was mailed in 1944 by a corporal stationed at Westover Field, the wartime Army airfield near Springfield, to family in Pittsburgh. That correspondence links the city's insurance landmark to the movement of service members through the region during World War II.
