Hoover (Boulder) Dam and Powerhouse, Boulder City, NV, circa 1936

About this postcard

An elevated view looks across Black Canyon on the Colorado River to the curved concrete face of Hoover (Boulder) Dam, with intake towers rising from the reservoir and the powerhouse at the river level. Lake Mead stretches behind the dam, and Fortification Mountain stands on the horizon above the red-brown canyon walls. The caption's dual name reflects the 1930s dispute over whether the dam should honor Herbert Hoover or carry the Boulder Canyon project name. When completed in 1936, the dam was the tallest in the world, rising 727 feet from bedrock to crest and measuring 650 feet thick at its base. Its crest forms a highway bridge between Nevada and Arizona, part of a transcontinental route.
