About this postcard
A horse-drawn carriage with several passengers and a driver in a light hat waits on a sandy street beside the coquina-stone wall of St. Augustine's old fortifications. The printed text presents the carriage as an old landmark and explains that such carriages, dating from before the age of motors, offered leisurely rides to the city's points of interest. The drivers served as guides, well versed in St. Augustine legend, folklore, and traditions; the caption refers to them as colored, a period term. Founded by Spain in 1565, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the continental United States. Its colonial walls and gates were long a standard stop for visitors.
