A night scene shows three white horses pulling a steam fire engine at a gallop, the driver braced on the apparatus. At left, firemen handle a hose beside a second engine while flames and smoke fill the background. The printed caption identifies the scene as the New York Fire Department. Horse-drawn steam fire engines remained in use in many American cities into the early 1900s; crews tended the boiler to keep steam up on the way to a fire.
