Horse Guards, Whitehall, London, circa 1910

About this postcard

A black-and-white view of the Horse Guards building on Whitehall in London, with its clock tower rising above the rooflines and the dome of St Paul's Cathedral faint on the skyline at right. A crowd of soldiers and civilians, many in uniform, fills the courtyard and pavement in front of the guardhouse and archways. Horse Guards has served as the headquarters of the British Army's Household Cavalry and the ceremonial entrance to St James's Palace since the 18th century, and its courtyard is still the setting for the daily Changing of the Guard.
