Thoroughbreds break from the numbered starting gate at Hialeah Park as a crowd fills the grandstand and the rail along the infield. The caption reads "They're Off" and describes a full field in a race at the track on the outskirts of Miami, where the winter season drew spectators to three South Florida courses. By the 1940s Hialeah was one of the country's fashionable winter racing venues, known for its Mediterranean-style buildings and its flamingos.
