About this postcard
A view across a broad street and a terraced lawn of trees toward the Hotel Roanoke, a large Tudor Revival hostelry with half-timbered gables and green roofs, an American flag flying above it; at left stands the tall office building of the Norfolk and Western Railway. The Hotel Roanoke opened in 1882 and was built by the Norfolk and Western Railway, which long maintained its headquarters in the city; the present Tudor-style building dates largely from a 1930s rebuilding. The card's photograph was supplied by the railway itself, a common practice for company-owned hotels.
