About this postcard
The picture shows the Hotel St. Francis, a tall three-winged Beaux-Arts hotel, rising over Union Square in San Francisco, with a streetcar and horse-drawn traffic on the street below and the Dewey Monument column at the right edge of the square. The hotel, designed by Bliss & Faville, opened in 1904 on the west side of Union Square and became one of the city's best-known hostelries, surviving the 1906 earthquake and fire. The column topped by a figure of Victory is the Dewey Monument, dedicated in 1903 to Admiral George Dewey's victory at Manila Bay.
