About this postcard

A composite view of St. Louis centers on the Hotel Statler tower, with Mississippi riverfront steamboats and bridges, a church spire, and the equestrian Apotheosis of St. Louis before a classical building. The Statler opened in 1917 as one of downtown St. Louis's grand hotels. The statue, sculpted by Charles Henry Niehaus, depicts King Louis IX and was displayed at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition; it now stands in Forest Park outside the Saint Louis Art Museum, the former Palace of Fine Arts. Mabel's note mentions lunch and continuing to Davenport, Iowa, after a rainy night and a warm day.

July 8 - 1934 We are going to have lunch pretty soon and will then proceed to Davenport for tonight. Left here in an awful down pour last evening but it soon cleared up. Warm today. Rode yesterday over their very pretty country. Love, Mabel
