Broken ice floes pack the frozen St. John River at Fredericton, piled against the banks while a long steel truss bridge crosses in the background. The sky is tinted blue with a pinkish horizon. Ice jams were a familiar spring hazard on the St. John River, when thawing upstream sent floes downstream to pile up at bridges and low banks. Fredericton, the provincial capital, sits on a bend of the river, and the view captures the water at a moment when the ice has broken but not cleared.
