The picture shows Independence Rock, a low granite outcrop rising from the grassy Wyoming plains, with the Sweetwater River winding through the foreground and a road curving at left. The printed caption calls it "The Register of the Desert," a reference to the many emigrant names carved into the rock along the Oregon Trail. Independence Rock was a well-known landmark for westward travelers in the mid-19th century, and the Sweetwater River was a major route through the region.
