The Indiana State Capitol stands behind a broad lawn, its central dome topped by a lantern and its porticoes carried on columns. A monument on a pedestal occupies the left edge of the grounds, and a few strollers move along the walk. Completed in 1888, the capitol was built of Indiana limestone and houses the Indiana General Assembly and the governor's office. Its classical front and tall dome have long been landmarks of downtown Indianapolis.
