About this postcard
A baby in a long white dress sits propped in a dark wicker chair, braced against a ruffled cushion, in a dim interior with patterned wallpaper or drapery behind. The child's dress and the chair fill most of the frame, and the pose is the careful, upright arrangement a photographer used to keep an infant still for the exposure. Infant portraits like this were a standard errand of the period: parents dressed the baby in white, regardless of sex, and took the child to a studio or to a traveling photographer who printed the negative on postcard stock so copies could be mailed to relatives.
