About this postcard
The walled courtyard of Ramona's Marriage Place in Old Town San Diego, viewed across the fountain basin: a tiled-roof adobe wing behind, an American flag at the roofline, and dense plantings of banana, bougainvillea and flowering shrubs. The building is the Casa de Estudillo, raised in the 1820s by the Estudillo family and later promoted as the marriage place of Helen Hunt Jackson's novel Ramona, a claim that made the old adobe a fixture of San Diego sightseeing by the 1930s. A visitor writing in January 1942 reported only that they had seen the place, then planned the next day's trip to Tia Juana (Tijuana), the border town that had long been a standard side excursion from San Diego. The card carries a wartime slogan cancel urging the purchase of defense bonds and stamps, a common sight on mail in the first weeks after Pearl Harbor.
