About this postcard

View down the interior of the Detroit River Tunnel, showing the twin railway tracks receding into darkness beneath a curved concrete-lined arch. Cables and pipes run along the whitewashed tunnel walls. The tunnel was built for the Michigan Central Railroad at a cost of $8,500,000 and ran 1⅜ miles under the Detroit River. Construction began in July 1906 and was completed on July 1, 1910. Electric third-rail power drove the engines, and the view dates from the tunnel's first year of service.
