About this postcard
The card shows the reconstructed interior of the great Council House (ceremonial earth lodge) at the Ocmulgee site in Macon, Georgia, with its circular earthen floor, central fire basin, and the sloping roof supported by heavy posts and pole rafters. The original lodge was built by the Mississippian mound-building culture around 1000–1100 CE and could hold roughly 1,500 people for council and ritual gatherings. Excavated and partly reconstructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the site became Ocmulgee National Monument in 1936 and is now Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park.
