About this postcard

A steam locomotive with a passenger coach climbs the steep wooden trestle called Jacob's Ladder on the Mount Washington Cog Railway, trailing smoke across the mountainside. The line opened in 1869 as the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway and uses a toothed rack rail to haul trains up Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States. Jacob's Ladder is the steepest grade on the 3.75-mile route, and the printed caption notes that three miles of the railway run on trestle. The caption also points to the summit hotel, the Mt. Washington Club, which it calls "a Club in the clouds."
