About this postcard
A steam locomotive with a passenger coach climbs the steep wooden trestle known as Jacob's Ladder on the Mount Washington Cog Railway, with a plume of smoke trailing across the mountainside. The line, opened in 1869, was the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway and uses a toothed rack rail to haul trains up the slopes of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States. The trestle shown here was a celebrated feature of the ascent before it was replaced by a fill in the early 20th century.
