About this postcard
The Jacques-Cartier Bridge crosses the St. Lawrence River at Montreal, its long steel truss spans carried on massive stone piers. Stone buildings and a working waterfront fill the near shore in the foreground, with the bridge sweeping across the river behind them. The bridge opened in 1930, named for the explorer Jacques Cartier and built to connect Montreal with the south shore at Longueuil. Its cantilever steel design was among the large river crossings of its era, and the view became a standard Montreal postcard subject soon after it opened.
