About this postcard
The small red brick law office of James Monroe stands under trees on a Fredericksburg street, with green shutters, dormer windows, a large chimney, and ivy at one end. An American flag hangs from the facade. The caption identifies it as the office where Monroe, fifth president and author of the Monroe Doctrine, practiced law. It notes that Fredericksburg gave him his first political office, the start of a career that carried him into more public offices than any other American before or since. The building was restored as a National Shrine by his great-grandson Laurence Hoes.
