About this postcard
The James River curves through Lynchburg, Virginia, between steep, tree-covered hills in autumn color. Small wooded islands break the current, and a tall smokestack sends a plume of smoke above the tree line in the distance. A low range of blue hills closes the horizon under a clear sky. The caption calls this "some of the beauty and industry" along the historic river, which rises in the Appalachian Mountains and runs to Chesapeake Bay. Lynchburg grew as a tobacco and manufacturing town on the James, and the smokestack marks the industrial riverfront that shared the valley with the wooded banks.
