James River from Boat Club House, Lynchburg, VA, circa 1910

About this postcard

An elevated tinted view looks over treetops to a broad bend of the James River, with wooded hills and open bottomland fields beyond and a small red outbuilding on the far bank. The caption places the viewpoint at the Boat Club House, a riverside club where Lynchburg members gathered to row and watch the river. Lynchburg grew as a tobacco market and river-shipping town on this stretch of the James. Bateaux and the James River and Kanawha Canal carried goods through the region before the railroads took over, and the river remained a working and recreational artery for the city.
