Jewel Box flower gardens, Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri, circa 1940

About this postcard

A formal sunken garden of massed annual beds in pink, red, yellow and white, threaded by curving tan paths and a small blue pool stocked with goldfish, with Japanese-style stone lanterns, a pagoda ornament and a rustic wooden bridge among palms and trees. The caption names it the Jewel Box in Forest Park, St. Louis — the Art Deco glasshouse conservatory and floral display built in 1936 and still a landmark of the park. The scene shows the surrounding outdoor flower gardens rather than the glass building itself.
