About this postcard
An oil portrait of John Howard Payne shows him as a young man with dark curly hair, a black coat, white shirt, and black cravat, seated before a dark green-brown background with the red back of an upholstered chair at the right. The likeness is by C. G. Thompson and is in the collection of the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery in San Marino, California. Payne was an American actor and playwright, best remembered for writing the lyrics to "Home Sweet Home," a song from the 1823 opera Clari, or The Maid of Milan. The song became a staple of 19th-century parlors, and the portrait presents him as the author of that familiar tune.
