Johnsons and Death Valley Scotty, Scotty's Castle, CA, circa 1931

Card type
Real photo

About this postcard

Three people, a woman and two men, sit in the comfortably furnished living room of Scotty's Castle. Leather chairs, patterned upholstery, a table, lamps, and a radio fill the room. The printed caption identifies them as the Johnsons and Death Valley Scotty. The house in Grapevine Canyon was the desert home of Chicago insurance man Albert Johnson and his wife Bessie, though it took its popular name from Walter E. Scott, the prospector and showman known as Death Valley Scotty. The room's comfort contrasts with the prospector's camp image Scotty cultivated.
