About this postcard
A close view of Jupiter Terrace, one of the stepped travertine formations at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. Its stepped basins are tinted in bands of pink, orange, rust, and pale blue-white against a green hillside and distant blue mountains. Hot springs deposit calcium carbonate as the water cools, building the terrace-like shelves; heat-loving bacteria and algae produce the colors. The formation sits in the Mammoth Hot Springs area near the park's north entrance. The printed caption describes Jupiter Terrace as the largest hot springs terrace in the world and notes that the springs appear to boil from carbonic acid gas even though the water reaches only 163°F.
