Jupiter Terrace, Yellowstone National Park, circa 1935

About this postcard

A close view of Jupiter Terrace, one of the stepped travertine formations of Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, its cascading basins tinted in bands of pink, orange, rust and pale blue-white against a green hillside and distant blue mountains. Jupiter Terrace is fed by hot springs that deposit calcium carbonate as the water cools, building the terrace-like shelves seen here; the vivid colors come from heat-loving bacteria and algae. The formation sits in the Mammoth Hot Springs area near the park's north entrance.
