The formal studio portrait shows King George VI standing in naval full-dress uniform with decorations and a sword, beside Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother, seated in a pale gown and tiara. A dark draped curtain forms the backdrop.
The portrait dates from the early years of George VI's reign, after his 1937 coronation, and it circulated in Canada around the time of the 1939 royal tour, the first by a reigning British monarch to Canada.
