Knights of Columbus Building, Quincy, IL, 1913

About this postcard

The image shows a three-story brick and stone commercial building with a heavy bracketed cornice and a band lettered "KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS." Two-story engaged columns frame large windows above ground-floor storefronts, and pedestrians and a small wagon appear on the sidewalk. The Knights of Columbus, founded in 1882 as a Catholic fraternal benefit society, established council halls in many American cities in the early 20th century. Such buildings often combined meeting rooms upstairs with shops or offices at street level, giving fraternal organizations a formal downtown presence while generating rental income from the commercial front.
