La Intendencia and its plaza, San Juan, Puerto Rico, circa 1904
- Card type
- Government postal card
About this postcard
A view across a paved plaza toward the long two-story Intendencia building, with an American flag flying above it and rows of lamp posts, benches and small trees in the foreground; arcaded commercial buildings line the left and right sides. The Intendencia was the Spanish colonial treasury building of San Juan, erected in the 1840s and later used by the United States military government after 1898; it now houses the Puerto Rico Department of State. The flag and the 1904 date on the card reflect the island's new status under United States administration following the Spanish-American War.
