Lackawanna Avenue looking east, Scranton, Pennsylvania, circa 1905

About this postcard

A view east along Lackawanna Avenue in Scranton, Pennsylvania, lined with multi-story Victorian commercial blocks, a hotel (the Lackawanna House) on the left, and a dense forest of telegraph and trolley poles; pedestrians crowd the sidewalks and trolley cars recede down the street. Lackawanna Avenue was Scranton's principal business thoroughfare during the city's anthracite-coal boom, when it carried department stores, hotels, and the electric street railway lines seen here. The tall pole lines and horse-and-buggy-era dress date the view to the first decade of the twentieth century.
