About this postcard
The picture shows the Ladd House, a three-story clapboarded Georgian dwelling with dark green shutters and a small pedimented entrance porch, standing behind a white picket fence and shaded by large old trees; a small gabled outbuilding appears at the left. The card's own caption names it and dates its construction to 1760 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Portsmouth's colonial merchant houses are noted for just this kind of Georgian detailing — symmetrical sash windows, a paneled doorway and a hipped or gambrel roof — and the house is presented here as one of the town's old landmarks.
