About this postcard

Full-length portrait of Lady Arabella Stuart in a striped gown with a wide ruff collar and a jeweled headdress, a patterned hanging or chair back behind her. The caption gives the canvas as 40 by 61 inches and credits it to "Marc Geerarts," the card's spelling of Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger, the Flemish-born painter who worked at the Elizabethan and Jacobean courts. Arabella Stuart (1575-1615) was a cousin of James I and for a time a candidate for the English succession. Her secret marriage to William Seymour in 1610 led to imprisonment in the Tower of London, where she died. The card reproduces the painting for the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, which opened in 1956.
