About this postcard

The portrait shows Lady Arabella Stuart full length in Elizabethan dress, with a large ruff collar and a fan-shaped headdress, standing before a patterned tapestry or chair on a tiled floor. The caption names the painter as Marc Geerarts, likely a garbled form of Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger, the Flemish-born English portraitist known for court portraits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Arabella Stuart was a cousin of James I and a claimant to the English throne. Her secret marriage to William Seymour in 1610 led to imprisonment in the Tower of London, where she died in 1615.
