The Lafayette Statue in Burlington, Vermont, stands as a bronze figure on a tall white pedestal inscribed with his name. Trees surround the monument, and a red brick church with a slender spire rises behind it; a single dark-coated figure walks the path at left. The monument honors the Marquis de Lafayette, the French officer who served as a major general in the American Revolution and whose 1824-25 return tour was widely celebrated. By the early twentieth century the statue was an established local landmark.
