A long, many-windowed white hotel stands at the water's edge of a deep blue mountain lake, framed by dense conifers, with a banded, red-capped peak rising behind it. The scene is Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, where the Great Northern Railway's Lake McDonald Hotel (opened 1914) lodged park visitors on the lake shore beneath Mount Brown and Mount Edwards. The reddish striping of the peak comes from the Grinnell argillite formation characteristic of the park's mountains.
